Breast Cancer Awareness- Why the Pink Ribbon?

breast cancer awarenessBy now, October has become synonymous with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which was initiated in 1985. This yearly health initiative is backed by major breast cancer charities, with an eye towards raising awareness – and research funds – for the fight against breast cancer. The annual awareness campaign focuses largely on early detection; and is so prolific that major corporations, sports teams and news organizations recognize and participate in acknowledging the nationwide efforts.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) began as a team effort between the American Cancer Society and a major pharmaceutical firm marketing several anti-breast cancer drugs. From the beginning, the goal was to get the word out about mammography and early detection as the best possible defense against breast cancer. IN its 6th year of observance, the Susan G. Komen Foundation distributed pink ribbons to race participants in its New York City event for breast cancer survivors. Two years later, in 1993, Alexandra Penney, editor-in-chief of the health magazine Self, partnered with breast cancer survivor Evelyn Lauder, of the Estée Lauder Companies to establish the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The foundation chose the pink ribbon as its official symbol, and to this day, purchasing, displaying or wearing pink ribbons signifies a solidarity and concern for women everywhere.

But the “pink” has gone beyond the ribbon at this point. Pink clothing, handbags, jewelry and more are sold, often with proceeds going to breast cancer research or care. The list is endless, it seems, of the products that can be purchased to show support during this month.
